La star américaine est morte à son domicile en Floride. Les causes de son décès ne sont pas encore connues.
Elle est connue pour avoir joué dans le film « Fame », en 1980, dans lequel elle chante cette chanson culte.
En 1984, Irene Cara remporte un Grammy et un Oscar pour la chanson « What a Feeling » qu’elle a écrite pour le film Flashdance.
